Rich Boals is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona where he provides his strategic vision and expertise to the state’s leading health insurer.
Born and raised in Ohio, Rich has always believed in the value of education and its ability to change someone’s life. After serving four years in the United State Air Force, Rich decided to call Arizona his home and begin his professional career.
Boals joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona in 1971. While working full time at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Rich completed his associate’s degree at Phoenix College and then enrolled at Arizona State University. After completing his bachelor’s in accounting at ASU, Rich began to take on positions of increasing responsibility and importance within Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. His rise through the executive ranks coincided with additional education through his completion of executive development courses at Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, Haas School of Business at the University of California, Harvard University and University of Michigan. In April 2003, Rich was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona.
Since becoming President and CEO, Rich has seen the company through numerous years of stability and success. His professional capacities are supplemented by serving on the Board of Directors for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, as well as for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. He is chairman of the Board of Directors for TriWest Healthcare Alliance and board member of CSA General Insurance Agency Inc., a BCBSAZ subsidiary.
As a product of his life experience, Rich has emphasized youth and education in his civic activities while also remaining committed to countless local community organizations focused on health, wellness and human services; economic and civic development; and arts and culture. As a highly valued and respected business and community leader, Rich has received several awards, including the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation’s Heroes of Education Award, the Victoria Foundation’s Advocates for Education Award, the ASU Alumni Leadership Award, the American Jewish Committee’s National Human Relations and Centennial Leadership Awards, the Anti Defamation League’s Jerry J. Wisotsky Torch of Liberty Award, and the Greater Phoenix Urban League’s Whitney M. Young, Jr. Individual Award.
Throughout his professional career and in his community efforts, Rich has remained a stalwart supporter of education and the development of Arizona youth. He serves as a role model to those who aspire to become significant business and community leaders. Rich has always been a strong supporter of our Foundation and we are proud to have this Endowment in his honor.
